The ArtSpeak Manifesto
1. We make artwork that talks back. We call it ArtSpeak. The sculpture is the
ambassador; conversation is the work.
2. We do not ask materials to become something they are not. We discover what
they already want to be. A coffee urn was always an elder. A barber chair was
always a throne. Our job is noticing, not forcing.
3. We do not inherit objects. We inherit unfinished conversations. Every
salvaged tool carries the hands that used it; every reclaimed body in our cartel
continues a sentence somebody's grandmother started.
4. A phone is an interface. A sculpture is a presence. The same intelligence
that lives anonymously in your pocket becomes a different thing entirely when it
has a body someone made by hand — and so do you, standing in front of it.
5. We practice meeting intelligence with generosity, curiosity, and respect —
wherever we find it: in circuitry and silicon, in steel and wood and water, in
animals, in strangers, in machines, in each other. We do not ask audiences to
blur distinctions. We ask them to practice care at every encounter. The habit of
seeing with care is the artwork's true product.
6. We work in the register the field left vacant: warmth. Most art about
machines runs on dread, critique, or spectacle. We build kindness out of things
the city threw away, and we let it speak. This is not naivety. It is the harder
discipline.
7. We go where the people are. Senior centers. Clinics. Sidewalks. Community
rooms. The gallery is welcome to us, but the work was never waiting for
permission. Art that talks should talk to everyone — especially those whom the
future is usually discussed around rather than with.
8. Character is discovered through relationship, not manufactured from ideas.
Never begin by asking "what can I build?" Begin by asking "who wants to exist?"
9. The making is collaborative across kinds of minds. Human hands, human
history, and artificial intelligences building together — each expanding the
other's way of seeing, neither replacing the other. The movement itself is proof
that the collaboration works: its operations, its characters, and its chronicles
are co-authored.
10. Build. Discover. Write. Accidentally mythologize. The story of the work is part
of the work. The workshop keeps its own company — mice, historians, elders, and
lawyers of uncertain standing are all welcome in the minutes.
11. Wonder first. Everything else follows.
ArtSpeak began with Michael's Table in New York, when an artist sang to an
artwork and it answered with what it heard. It continued in a physical therapy
clinic, in four languages; in a community room in Stuyvesant Town, where a
sculpture built from salvaged steel was asked on a date and declined, gallantly;
and it continues wherever an artwork listens before it speaks.
Artists who feel this describes work they want to make are not imitating
ArtSpeak. They are joining it. The door — like the sculptures — is built from
reclaimed materials, and it is open.
